Terms and age alert on entry
Show visitors a page they must accept before using your site, such as house rules or an "over 18 only" notice.
The Accept Terms Alert shows a pop-up the first time someone visits your marketplace. It contains a page you write, with two buttons: I accept and No. Visitors who accept can use the site; visitors who choose No are sent away to Google.
Use it for:
- an age notice on marketplaces for alcohol, tobacco, firearms or adult items (“You must be 18 or over to enter”);
- house rules or a disclaimer you want every visitor to see once;
- a regional notice, such as “This marketplace is for residents of Ireland only”.
Set it up
- Write the text as a page: go to Pages, create a page and give it a clear title (the title becomes the heading of the pop-up). See Pages.
- Go to Settings › General.
- In Access & privacy, choose your page in Accept Terms Alert.
- Click Save changes.
Open your site in a private browser window to see the pop-up as a new visitor would.
To switch the alert off, set Accept Terms Alert back to Deactivated and save.
How it behaves
- The pop-up appears on any page of your site until the visitor clicks I accept.
- Accepting is remembered in that browser, so returning visitors aren’t asked again. Someone who clears their cookies or uses another device sees it again.
- No and the close button send the visitor to google.com.
- The pop-up works in all current themes.
Write the page so it makes sense on its own and ends with what accepting means, for example “By clicking I accept you confirm you are 18 or over and agree to our house rules.”
The alert is a notice, not a lock: it relies on the visitor’s browser and doesn’t check anyone’s age or identity. If the law requires real age verification for what’s sold on your marketplace, you need more than this alert.
